Europe '72

Music

The 3-LP album Europe ’72 (released late in 1972) was the first document to emerge from the tour. A later CD re-release added more material. Several shows were subsequently released:  Hundred Year Hall showcased much of one of the German shows, as did Rockin’ the Rhein, which featured the complete show from Frankfurt. The full tour is showcased in a 72-CD boxed set (released fall 2011). The tour also marked the start of heavy bootlegging, with two radio broadcasts and two TV appearances appearing on vinyl LP and eventually CD. Part of the remarkable enthusiasm that greeted Rhino’s announcement of the boxed set of the complete tour in 2011 was the fact that so little of the material had found its way into fans’ hands, however—and what had been released was tantalizing and compelling.

Europe '72 cover

The three-LP Europe ’72 was an ambitious release by any standard. Although not Mouse and Kelley’s first choice for the cover design, the Ice-Cream Cone Kid and Rainbow Foot images soon became fixtures in the Dead’s expanding iconography.
